One of my favorite books that I have had the pleasure of reading is The Color Purple by Alice Walker. The book describes roughly 40 years of Celie's (the main character) life, describing the abuse and bigotry she faces. The story displays Celie's journey as she learns what love is and how to love herself after not experiencing it for the entirety of her adolescence, well into her adult life. While this book carries strong themes of rape and abuse, it is a beautiful story that I recommend to people who are comfortable with reading stories that carry similar themes. The book is beautifully written by Alice Walker and displays the struggles black women were forced to endure to survive in the south.
