This month I read “The Liar’s Guide to the Night Sky” by Brianna R. Shrum. It centers around Hallie Jacobs when her life is uprooted as her family moves across the nation and her life is changed. Shrum identities Hallie’s struggles with fitting in and how she feels held back by her experiences. One night, her and her cousins decide to go out late at night and get trapped in a mudslide on a mountain. The story follows Hallie as she tries to survive and find out who she is meant to be. Shrum does a good job with representation as multiple characters identify as different sexualities that she highlights well. She also addresses other issues like racism which she touches briefly on. She also talks about PTSD and depression towards the end of the book when the main characters experience such things. I wish Shrum explained more about the topics as she only gave them some chapters and pages here and there.
