The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett explores the way in which we perceive race and identity. Bennett does this through the relationship between the two sisters and their paralleling lives. Traveling through the time of the lives of sisters who both are white-passing. However, while one chooses to identify with her black identity, the other sister stands to benefit from her whiteness. In this way, the story begins to unravel the discrepancies between race and identity and how society as a whole perceives their existence.
