This novel follows the lives our two black twin girls after they run away from their hometown at a young age. It spans through generations and includes important topics like race and identity. The twins are brought up to look white because that is what their family has done for a long time. One of the twins returns with a daughter who is much darker, as she accepts her black heritage and tries to express by embracing it. The other is trying to pass for white. Even though it follows twins, their lives are very separate with some intertwining aspects throughout the story. There was also topics such as transgender and drag that I thought the author included exceedingly well. The author depicts the characters so that you fall in love with them and get invested in the story. I found this book easy to read and the incorporation of heavy topics was done fabulously.
