My Black History Month book was Their Eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. She was considered a Harlem Renaissance artist, who wrote of the struggles of the African American community in the 20th century. The novel details the love life of Janie, who goes through three marriages and learns more about love along the way. The book details abuse, racism, sexism, family, independence, and romance as Janie grows older. My personal favorite aspect of this book was the way in which Hurston wrote their speech. It is difficult to read at first, but the misspellings of words and improper grammar give the book so much life and personality. I think this is a must read to explore African American culture and community during the early 20th century.
